Mastering EBC Reader: Understanding the boolean search method

Learn how to use Boolean search on EBC Reader to find legal information faster and smarter. Master keywords, connectors, and filters to get precise results every time.

You can use this search by:

  • Enter the text with operators – AND, OR, NOT in the search tab.
  • Select Boolean from the Search Methods.
  • Click on Search to view results.
  • Using Search BOOLEAN – as shown below

Situation 1:

In this situation we have given an example of Boolean Search Method, by using :

criminal OR crime (shows the usage of OR)

Keyword: Criminal **OR **crime

Returns results that include one or more strings:

  • Any document that contains references to criminal law or criminal matters.
  • Criminal Act
  • any kind of mention of any crime

Situation 2:

In this situation, we have given an example of Boolean Search Method, by using :

crime AND gun (shows the use of AND)

Keyword: crime **AND ** gun

Returns results that include both strings:

  • any crime-related information
  • any crime committed with a gun and so on

In this situation, we have given an example of Boolean Search Method, by using :

murder NOT knife ( shows the use of NOT)

Keyword: Murder **NOT ** Knife

Returns results that include the first string but not the second string:

pri* AND wom?en (shows the use of special characters)

Single character boolean:? This will Return objects with one character in place of the question mark.

Returns objects that include the following strings:

Multiple character boolean: asterisk This will Return objects with zero or more characters in place of the asterisk.

Keyword: pri

Returns objects that include the following strings:

• primary

• principle

• price
