CLAT UG 2027 Maths is the smallest section of the paper, but it often decides who gets the last few ranks. It is called Quantitative Techniques, and it tests Class 10 level mathematics through short passages and data sets. This guide lists the topics worth revising before the exam on 6 December 2026. Technical terms are explained in plain words.

What Governs the Exam
No Act of Parliament sets the CLAT syllabus. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) does, through its notification. The Consortium has confirmed there will be no changes to the syllabus, pattern or sections in 2027. The paper has 120 multiple-choice questions to be solved in two hours, across five sections: English, current affairs with general knowledge, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques. Expert committee suggestions on question quality may be considered, and bigger structural changes are likely for CLAT 2028.
Check consortiumofnlus.ac.in for the exam mode, since sources differ on whether it is computer-based or on paper.
What the Quantitative Techniques Section Tests
Questions are built from short passages with facts, graphs, tables or forms, followed by a set of questions. You first extract the numbers from the text, then do basic calculations. Passages are often built around real-world contexts such as budgets, fines or court statistics. You do not need advanced maths, only speed and accuracy with Class 10 concepts. As in earlier years, expect roughly 10 to 14 questions, which is about 10% of the paper. Confirm the exact count in the official notice.
Class 10 Topics You Must Revise
| Topic | What to revise | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Percentages and ratio | Percentage change, ratio, proportion | High |
| Profit, loss, discount | Cost price, selling price, markup | High |
| Averages and mixtures | Weighted average, simple mixtures | High |
| Data interpretation | Tables, bar, pie and line graphs | High |
| Simple and compound interest | Formulae, yearly compounding | Medium to High |
| Time, speed, distance, work | Basic formulae, simple word problems | Medium |
| Algebra | Linear equations, simple quadratics | Medium |
| Number system | HCF, LCM, fractions, divisibility | Medium |
| Mensuration and geometry | Area, perimeter, volume, triangles, circles | Medium |
| Statistics and probability | Mean, median, mode, basic probability | Medium |
The priorities are my estimates from the section’s style, not official weightage.
Data Interpretation: The Core Skill
Data interpretation (DI) means reading information from a table or chart and answering questions about it. Most CLAT maths sets lean on it.
Read the question first → Find the needed rows or bars
→ Note units (lakh, crore, percent) → Calculate → Re-check the unit
- Practise percentage change and ratio comparisons across rows and columns.
- Learn to round off. Many options differ by large margins.
- Watch for traps such as “percentage points” versus “percent”.
Time Management for Maths
Across the paper you have about one minute per question. Budget around 15 to 20 minutes for maths. Solve the easier sets first and skip long calculation sets until the end. Calculators are generally not permitted in such exams, so practise mental maths. Confirm the rule in the official instructions.
8-Week Revision Plan (From Today to 6 December)
Weeks 1-2: Percentages, ratio, averages
Week 3: Profit and loss, interest
Week 4: Time, speed, distance, work
Week 5: Algebra and number system
Week 6: Mensuration, statistics, probability
Week 7: Data interpretation and mixed sets
Week 8: Full mocks, error log, formula revision
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping maths because you fear it. Even 6 to 8 correct answers can lift your rank.
- Spending 3 minutes on one question.
- Ignoring units like lakh and crore.
- Memorising formulae without solving timed sets.
- Not keeping an error log of mistakes from mock tests.
FAQs
Class 10 level, per the usual description.
About 10 to 14 in earlier patterns. Check the official notice.
Earlier patterns deducted marks for wrong answers. Confirm in the 2027 notice.
Generally no. Check the exam-day instructions.
It helps for basics, then practise passage-based sets.
