Championing Diversity & Inclusion in the Judiciary
A major highlight of Justice Gavai’s speech was Justice Ramana’s commitment to creating a judiciary that reflects India’s social diversity.
He praised the historic appointment of nine Supreme Court judges in 2021, including one-third women—an important step towards gender representation at the highest level.

Justice Ramana on His Book: Thoughts Shaped Over a Lifetime
In his address, Justice Ramana explained that Narratives Off the Bench is not a memoir or doctrinal text, but a collection of thoughts he has shared through speeches over the years.
These reflections were shaped by his varied experiences—as a student leader, activist, journalist, lawyer, and judge.
He reiterated that the judiciary is not merely an adjudicator but a symbol of constitutional morality and hope.
Through his speeches, he sought to demystify the judicial system and address critical concerns such as:
- Indianisation of courts
- Improving judicial infrastructure
- Diversity and inclusion
- Strengthening legal aid
- The need for accessible justice in Indian languages
While acknowledging progress in digitisation and support systems, he noted that the National Judicial Infrastructure Authority remains a key goal yet to be achieved.
Solidarity on the Bench & Gratitude for Support
Justice Ramana expressed deep gratitude to Justice Gavai, Justice Kant, and Justice Nath, recalling moments of solidarity and collaboration on the bench—especially during the pandemic.
He thanked colleagues, law clerks, staff, and family members who supported him throughout his judicial journey.
He hoped the book would inspire young lawyers, spark conversations, and offer ordinary citizens a clearer understanding of the judiciary.
“Even a small conversation,” he said, “would be a welcome bonus.”
Justice Gavai’s Closing Words: Carrying the Legacy Forward
Justice Gavai concluded by acknowledging the profound influence Justice Ramana has had on him and the judiciary.
