This guide is written for Class 12 students, droppers and their parents, so legal terms are explained in plain words.
With about two months left, CLAT UG 2027 preparation needs a plan, not panic. The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the entrance exam for five-year integrated law degrees at participating National Law Universities (NLUs). It is scheduled for December 6, 2026, and applications close on October 31, 2026, as per the Consortium of NLUs notification. Here is what to do first, and which rules shape your admission.
Which laws and rules apply to CLAT?
No single Act governs CLAT. The Consortium of NLUs, the group of participating universities, runs it through its own notification. Several laws still decide who can apply and how seats are filled.
| Law or rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Advocates Act, 1961 | Governs the legal profession and gives the Bar Council of India (BCI) power over legal education. |
| BCI Rules of Legal Education, 2008 | Set baseline admission standards for law degrees, including minimum Class 12 marks. |
| Article 15, Constitution of India | Permits special provisions for SC, ST, OBC and economically weaker sections (EWS). The EWS quota came through the 103rd Amendment in 2019. |
| Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 | Section 32 requires reserved seats for candidates with benchmark disabilities in higher education. The Act also supports accommodations such as a scribe. |
| University domicile rules | Each NLU may reserve seats for home-state students. Check every university you want. |
Step 1: Apply before October 31
Do this before anything else. A missed deadline cannot be fixed.
- Eligibility: Class 12 passed or appearing, with minimum marks set in the notification. The BCI baseline is commonly 45% for general and 40% for SC and ST candidates; confirm the current figure.
- Age: Reports on the 2027 notification say there is no age limit.
- Documents: Photo, signature, and a category or disability certificate if claiming a reservation.
- Accuracy: Match your name and date of birth with your Class 10 certificate.
CLAT UG 2027 preparation: your 60-day roadmap
Days 1 to 10: Apply, take a diagnostic mock, find weak sections
Days 11 to 35: Build habits: reading, legal principles, maths, sectional drills
Days 36 to 52: Test: full CLAT mock tests every 3 days, review every error
Days 53 to 60: Polish: revise notes, light practice, sleep, check admit card
Do not start new books after day 35. Depth beats variety in any study plan this short.
Know the paper
The exam has 120 multiple-choice questions in two hours. Each right answer earns one mark and each wrong answer costs 0.25. The Consortium reported no change in the pattern or syllabus this year, so older CLAT UG syllabus guides still help.
| Section | What is tested | Quick tip |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | Reading comprehension | Read one editorial daily |
| Current Affairs and GK | Passage-based questions on recent events | Revise the last 12 months |
| Legal Reasoning | Applying a stated rule to facts | Practise two passages daily |
| Logical Reasoning | Arguments and inference | Find the conclusion first |
| Quantitative Techniques | Class 10 level maths | Short, timed sets |
Do this first: five priorities
- Take a timed full mock this week to find your weakest section.
- Fix reading speed, because most sections are passage-based.
- Build current affairs from monthly capsules, not daily news.
- Revise Class 10 maths for quantitative techniques.
- Review every wrong answer in a mock and log the reason.
